HADLEY, Mass. — Bates junior catcher/designated hitter Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) was named NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, announced by the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
Webb also picked up ECAC Division III Co-Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, sharing the award with Kevin Lyons of Westfield State.
Webb played a key role as Bates went 7-1 on the week, with its only loss a 7-2 result at Division I Maine. At 19-8, the Bobcats have set a team record for wins in a season (the former mark was 18 wins in 1984).
Webb delivered the game’s biggest hit in all three wins over the weekend against Colby. On Friday, his two-run double in the eighth lifted Bates to a 3-1 win. On Saturday, his two-run single keyed a five-run seventh inning in a 7-3 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Colby. In Game 2, Webb hit a grand slam in a 7-2 win. Webb also went 2-for-4 with an RBI double at Maine.
On the week, Webb hit .414 (12-for-29), with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .759, with 12 runs scored and 12 RBIs.
It is the second time Webb has won NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week honors. He also won it on April 6, 2009, and he remains the only Bates player to receive the award since 2004.
