Chapman, Epler in scoring position in decathlon at NED3′s
MEDFORD, Mass. — Bates first-year Jesse Chapman stood in third place among 14 competitors at the end of the first day of the New England Division III Track and Field Championships’ men’s decathlon, while junior teammate Brett Epler was in eighth place.
Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) had 3,163 points at the end of the day Thursday, behind a pair of Ephs from Williams: Isaac Nicholson (3,344) and Chris Fogler (3,261). Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) has 3,011 points. The athletes competed in the 100-meter dash, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 400-meter dash. Chapman outscored the field in the shot put with a top effort of 41-6, worth 646 points.
“Both Jesse and Brett are positioned well to have a very good second day,” said head coach Al Fereshetian.
The decathlon resumes at noon on Friday. The rest of the meet takes place on Saturday at 10 a.m.
