BEREA, Ohio — Bidding for a sixth career All-America honor, Bates College senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) finished in perhaps the most difficult spot of all on Thursday: making the finals but finishing ninth, one spot out of All-America territory, at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Duncan registered the seventh-best effort in the preliminary round, based on her second throw of the day, which traveled 51.94 meters, or 170 feet and 5 inches, well short of her season’s best mark of 177-6 despite being nearly 7 feet beyond the provisional qualifying mark for NCAA’. Two throwers were able to pass Duncan in the finals.
The five-time All-American gets another shot at No. 6 on Friday in the shot put, the event she was the national runner-up in at the 2010 NCAA indoor championships in March. Preliminary heats for the shot start at 5 p.m.
