Men’s cross country dominates Colby in class wave races

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — Bates and Colby opened up the 2010 cross country season on Saturday with class wave races at Pineland Farms. In a modified scoring system in which high score wins, the Bates men defeated Colby 70-39.
The men’s races were divided up as one combining juniors and seniors, and the other pitting first-years and sophomores. Bates won the junior/senior men’s race 34-20, led by senior Devin Dilts’ (Roscoe, Ill.) winning time of 19:38 over a 6-kilometer course. Colby senior Ben Cunkelman was second in 19:42, and Bates rounded out the top five with senior Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.) in third (20:12), junior Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in fourth (20:29) and senior Ben Taska (Lowell, Vt.) in fifth (20:32).
Bates also took four of the top five slots in the first-year/sophomore race, led by first-year Noah Graboys’ (Glencoe, Ill.) first-place time of 19:26, followed closely by sophomore Andrew Wortham’s (Newton, Mass.) second-place 19:31. After Colby’s Brian Desmond checked in third in 20:04, close behind came Bates first-year Michael Martin (Slatersville, R.I.) in fourth (20:06), followed by sophomore Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.) in fifth (20:12).
A combined men’s and women’s total score was also determined, with Colby edging Bates 113-106.
The Bates men and women will host a larger meet next Saturday at Pineland Farms, with Colby, Bowdoin and Tufts all visiting.
