Women’s cross country opens with class wave races vs. Colby

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — Bates and Colby opened up the 2010 cross country season on Saturday with class wave races at Pineland Farms. In a modified scoring system in which high score wins, Colby defeated Bates in the women’s race, 74-36.
The women’s races were split into sophomores and seniors in one race, then first-years and juniors competing in the second race over a 2.84-mile course.
The sophomore/senior race saw Colby sweep the top four spots, with sophomores Berol Dewdney and Amy Tortorello first and second at 17:42 each, sophomore Layne Schwab in fourth at 17:43 and Emma Linhard fourth at 17:46. Bates senior captain Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) nabbed the fifth spot in 17:57.
Colby rookies took the first three spots in the first-year/junior race, with Allison Rigby first in 17:34, Kate Connolly in 17:37 and Sophie Weaver third at 18:02. Bates first-yar Mira Carey-Hatch (Laconia, N.H.) was fourth at 18:09, followed by Bates junior Jenny Monsulick (Readfield, Maine) in fifth at 18:18.
A combined men’s and women’s total score was also determined, with Colby edging Bates 113-106.
The Bates men and women will host a larger meet next Saturday at Pineland Farms, with Colby, Bowdoin and Tufts all visiting.
