HADLEY, Mass. — Bates junior goalkeeper Greg Watts was named the NESCAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week on Monday, the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced.
Watts’ (West Chester, Pa.) diving save of a laser shot by Bowdoin’s Ben Denton-Schneider late in the second half was the highlight play of a thrilling 0-0 tie between the Bobcats and Polar Bears, which ended Bowdoin’s seven-match win streak over Bates. Watts made 12 saves in the shutout, which was the seventh of his career. He made four saves, all in the second half, on Tuesday in a 2-1 non-league win over UMaine-Farmington, leading the Bobcats to a 1-0-1 record for the week with a save percentage of .941.
Watts is Bates’ first NESCAC Player of the Week since Oct. 27, 2008, when teammate Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.) won the honor.
