Bettles makes it to A Singles Flight finals at Wallach Invitational

LEWISTON, Maine — Unseeded Sean Doerfler, a senior from Amherst, won the A Singles Flight of the annual Wallach Men’s Tennis Invitational at Bates College, upsetting top-seeded Matt Bettles of the host Bobcats in the final on Sunday, 6-3, 7-6 (0).
Bettles (Taunton, England) defeated fourth-seeded Luke Granger of Skidmore in the bracket semifinals earlier in the day, 6-3, 6-3.
Bettles and sophomore teammate Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.), seeded fourth in A Doubles, fell 8-2 in the semifinal round to the eventual flight champions, top-seeded Jimmy Sherpa and Spencer Cheng of Skidmore.
Bates’ doubles pair of senior Sam Woods (Cambridge, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle DeSisto (Cohasset, Mass.) defeated Jason Ottomano and Matt Carroll of Colby in the B Doubles Flight semifinals 8-4 on Sunday, advancing to the final, where Skidmore’s Oliver Loutsenko and Alex Fromson won the flight title by an 8-1 score.

Bettles stayed in the hunt for the A Singles bracket title and, along with Crampton, for the A Doubles title as well.
Bettles received a first-round bye before defeating Tom Kimball of Colby 6-2, 6-2 in the A singles quarterfinals.
Bettles and Crampton, seeded fourth in A Doubles, won a pair of matches on Saturday — 8-4 over Charles McConnell/Kayong Lee of Trinity and 8-4 over Gumport/Will Rives of Amherst, to advance to Sunday’s semifinals.
Woods and DeSisto cruised to an 8-1 win over Boguslawski/Kemp of Trinity.
Three rookies on the Bobcats — Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.), Eric Ruta (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) — won first-round matches in the B Singles bracket before falling in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
