Men’s soccer edged by Cardinals on early goal, 1-0
LEWISTON, Maine — Evan Hazelett’s goal in the 10th minute held up as the game-winner as Wesleyan University defeated the Bates College men’s soccer team 1-0 in a NESCAC game played Saturday at Russell Street Field.
Hazelett (Amherst, Mass.) scored with 40:38 left in the first period, when first-year Michael McCarthy (Edina, Minn.) collected the ball at the edge of the Bates penalty area, cut around a defender and passed to Hazelett at the left corner of an open Bates net for an easy goal.
The Cardinals (6-5-0, 2-4-0 NESCAC) took 15 shots in the game compared to six for Bates and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Bates junior goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) made three saves, while sophomore Adam Purdy (Montclair, N.J.) made one save in the shutout.
The game got rough, particularly in the second half, when five yellow cards were issued and 18 fouls were committed.
Bates (3-7-1, 1-5-1 NESCAC) plays a non-league game at Husson on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
