Heldman, Holland pace alpine team at St. Lawrence Carnival

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Both the men’s and women’s alpine ski teams from Bates College posted strong days in the slalom on Saturday at the St. Lawrence Carnival, each placing fifth out of 10 competing teams.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams took eighth place out of 14 teams overall at the carnival, with 480 points, close behind Colby (496).
Senior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) finished 12th among 56 women with a two-run combined time of 1:43.50, for her second straight top-20 finish. First-year Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) came in 22nd at 1:45.35, and sophomore Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) was 28th.
On the men’s side, junior Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) came in 12th out of 60 racers in 1:33.61, while junior Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) posted his second straight top-15 finish, taking 14th place at 1:33.69. Senior Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) was 22nd in 1:35.67.
Bates heads to nearby Sugarloaf for next weekend’s Colby Carnival.
Bates received an 11th-place showing out of 60 competitors in the giant slalom from Bump Heldman, highlighting the first day of the St. Lawrence Carnival, the opening weekend of the EISA circuit at Whiteface Mountain.
Heldman put together a pair of strong runs, at 1:03.00 and 1:02.54, to score 29 team points for Bates.
Brockman placed 32nd and first-year Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) was 33rd for the Bobcats.
For the women’s team, Micaela Holland placed 19th overall out of 55 competitors, with a two-run combined time of 2:13.69. Livingston timed in at 2:17.26 for 27th place, and first-year Kelly Mackenzie (Alta, Wyo.) finished 35th to round out the team’s scoring.
