Holland paces alpine team in slaloms at Colby Carnival

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Bates senior Micaela Holland tied for ninth place among 55 competitors on Saturday in the slalom competition at the Colby Carnival, highlighting the Bobcat alpine ski team’s day at Sugarloaf.
Bates’ alpine and Nordic teams combined for a score of 509 points, good for seventh place out of 12 teams at the carnival.
Holland (Belmont, Mass.), a two-time NCAA Championship competitor, finished her two runs in a combined time of 1:29.49, tying with Dartmouth’s Kelsey Roddick. First-years Kelly Mackenzie (Alta, Wyo.) and Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) also scored in 40th and 41st places, respectively.
The Bates men’s alpine squad received an 18th-place performance by senior Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine), who had a combined time of 1:21.53, the second top-20 finish in as many days for the one-time All-American. Senior Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) placed 21st in 1:21.82, and senior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) was 39th in 1:30.43.
Bates junior Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) and Ben Manter finished 14th and 15th, respectively, out of 58 competitors in the giant slalom on Friday.
Heldman had a first run of 1:02.68, the eighth fastest time of the day, and finished with a two-run combined time of 2:08.00. Manter timed in at 2:08.67. Ross Brockman placed 22nd.
On the women’s squad, Micaela Holland placed 20th out of 56 skiers, her third top-20 finish in as many events this season, with a two-run combined time of 2:16.74. Sophomore Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) and Anne Rockwell were 27th and 28th, respectively.
