Heldman, Jones head Bates in the slaloms at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. — Junior Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) placed 13th out of 61 competitors in the slalom on Saturday at the UVM Carnival, posting a two-run combined time of 1:43.54. It is the fourth top-15 finish this season for Heldman.
Junior Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) came in 16th in 1:44.63 and senior Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) rounded out Bates scorers in 28th place.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic teams placed eighth place out of 13 competing teams at the carnival, with 471 points.
Sophomore Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) led the Bates women by finishing 20th out of 54 in the slalom, posting a combined time of 2:01.26. First-year Kelly Mackenzie (Alta, Wyo.) was the team’s only other finisher, coming in 27th in 2:04.22.
Manter and Heldman placed 20th and 21st, respectively, to lead the Bates alpine ski teams in the giant slaloms on Friday at the UVM Carnival.
Manter had a two-run combined time of 2:04.82 for 20th place among 60 competitors in the men’s giant slalom. Heldman had a fast second run of 1:00.82 to place right behind Manter in 2:05.36. Jones rounded out the men’s team’s scoring in 37th place at 2:08.67.
On the women’s side, first-year Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine), Mackenzie and Livingston placed 33rd, 34th and 35th, respectively, out of 54 competitors.
Bates travels to Hanover, N.H., next weekend for the Dartmouth Carnival at Dartmouth Skiway.
