Women’s Nordic takes fourth place in 5K Freestyle at UVM

STOWE, Vt. — The Bates women’s Nordic ski team finished fourth out of 13 teams on Saturday in the women’s 5K Freestyle race at the UVM Carnival, trailing only Division I teams Vermont, Dartmouth and New Hampshire. It is the fifth time in six races this carnival season that the Bates women have placed fourth.
Bates senior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.) edged senior Natalie Ruppertsberger for 11th place out of 69 skiers in the race, with a time of 15:36.1. Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) came in 12th in 15:38.8. Junior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) was 14th and senior Meg McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) gave Bates four competitors in the top 17.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic teams finished the UVM Carnival in eighth place out of 13 competing teams at the carnival, with 461 points.
In the men’s 10K Freestyle race, first-year Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) continued his impressive rookie campaign by tying for 21st place out of 64, with a time of 28:08.0. Sophomore Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) was 48th and first-year Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) placed 58th.
The Bates women’s Nordic ski team finished fourth out of 13 teams on Friday in the 15K Classic Mass Start race.
Ruppertsberger led the way by taking 10th place among 69 competitors, her third top-10 finish of the season in as many attempts. Ruppertsberger finished the course in 55:11.9. Gill continued her outstanding first half of the season by placing 15th, finishing in 55:53.7. Taylor was 23rd in 57:08.0.
In the men’s 20K Classical Mass Start race, Bates first-year Buetow again led the Bobcats, notching his best finish thus far by coming in 23rd out of 62 in 1:06:19.1. Milliken was 42nd in 1:08:50.6, and first-year Peter Cowan (Bethel, Maine) came in 46th in 1:09.34.1.
Bates travels to Hanover, N.H., next weekend for the Dartmouth Carnival at Oak Hill.
