LEWISTON, Maine — Among the many scores and results to look out for in Bates athletics this weekend, some of the higlights include the Bates men’s and women’s basketball teams play Tufts in their regular-season finales, men’s squash has Senior Day against Colby, and the No. 9-ranked men’s track and field team is busy with two meets.
The Bates women’s basketball team (17-6, 5-3 NESCAC) has won its most games since the 2005-06 season, when the Bobcats finished 19-9 and played in the NCAA Championship tournament. They are in the hunt for a top-four seed and a home game in next weekend’s NESCAC Championship quarterfinals, along with Colby, Williams, Bowdoin and Saturday’s opponent, the Jumbos (16-5, 4-4). Only league-leading Amherst has clinched a top-four seed to this point. (UPDATE: At the conclusions of Friday night’s games around the NESCAC, Bates can finish as high as the fourth seed and as low as the sixth seed. The Bobcats can earn the No. 4 seed with a win along with wins by Colby and Williams on Saturday.) Follow the game via Live Stats and Video Webcast.
The men’s basketball team is out of the running for a top-four seed in the NESCAC Championship next weekend, but they will be in with a win at Tufts, and might even secure the fifth seed if they can beat the Jumbos, who sport a record (12-11, 3-5 NESCAC) identical to Bates’. The Bobcats could still earn a berth despite a loss, depending on other league results. (UPDATE: After Friday night’s results, Bates is now guaranteed to be the fifth, sixth or seventh seed at NESCACs.) Follow the game via Live Stats and Video Webcast.
While the women’s squash team has finished its regular season and is focused solely on next weekend’s CSA Team Nationals at Princeton, the men’s squash team wraps up its regular slate with matches on back-to-back nights against Bates’ two traditional rivals. The Bobcats play at Bowdoin on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday’s Senior Day match against Colby at 12 p.m. The team will graduate a deep and strong Class of 2011: Doug Compton (West Hartford, Conn.), Nick Echeverria (Washington, D.C.), Will Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.), Dae Ro Lee (Yongin, South Korea), Matt Marchisotto (New York, N.Y.) and Patrick Williams (Boston, Mass.) have combined for 182 wins and only 116 losses over their Bates careers.
The Bates men’s and women’s track and field teams both return some team members to the banked indoor track at Boston University for Friday’s Valentine Invitational. The teams stay in the Boston area on Saturday afternoon for the Tufts Invitational. The Bates men are currently ranked No. 9 in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III National Team Rankings, based on the Bobcats’ projected points in the NCAA Championship in March. (See the complete rankings at this link.)
The Bates swimming and diving teams compete Saturday a few miles down Route 196 in the Maine Event Invitational at Bowdoin, starting at 1 p.m. It’s the final tuneup for both teams before their respective, all-important conference championships. The NESCAC Women’s Championships take place Feb. 18-20 at Williams, while the men’s NESCACs take place the following weekend at Bowdoin.
The second half of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival season begins this weekend at the Dartmouth Carnival. The alpine ski teams compete in the giant slalom on Friday and the slalom on Saturday at Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, N.H. The Nordic ski teams have the Women’s 5K Freestyle and the Men’s 10K Freestyle races on Friday at Oak Hill in Hanover, N.H., followed by 10K Classic Technique races for both teams on Saturday. Carnival results can be found at this link.
