Women’s tennis wins at No. 1 singles, No. 3 doubles at St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Bates women’s tennis team lost 7-2 to the Bobcats of NAIA member St. Thomas University on Tuesday, in the second match of the team’s three-match week in Florida. On Monday the Bobcats opened their spring schedule with a 5-4 loss at NAIA member Northwood University in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Bates got its points against St. Thomas at No. 1 doubles, where junior Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) prevailed 8-6. Bates first-year Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) debuted with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

Russell was also on Bates’ winning doubles team in the Northwood match. She teamed up with sophomore Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) to win 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. The Bobcats swept the singles matches at Nos. 4 through 6: junior Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine), Russell and Doerer all won in straight sets.

Bates plays at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale on Friday at 9 a.m.
