Women’s lacrosse tipped at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in season opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Bates College women’s lacrosse team opened the 2011 season on Thursday with a 16-11 loss at NCAA tournament participant Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The host Athenas (2-0) overcame an early 2-0 Bates lead and posted a 7-4 lead after one half, thanks to a seven-goal spurt over 15 minutes. CMS never trailed by fewer than three goals the rest of the way.
Bates junior Joan O’Neill (Westwood, Mass.) led the Bobcats (0-1) with four goals and three assists, picking up where she left off last year, when she scored a team-high 59 points. It is the second seven-point game of O’Neill’s career. Sophomore Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) tallied three goals for her third career hat trick.
Junior Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and senior Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) both tallied a goal and an assist apiece. Junior Caroline Pierce (Weston, Mass.) and first-year Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) both scored one goal apiece.
Madi Shove led the Athenas in scoring with four goals and an assist, while CMS All-American Sarah Dick added four goals. Rachel Darby had three goals and an assist.
Senior goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) had 11 saves for Bates, while Katie Morrison made six saves to earn the win for CMS.
Bates plays host to Middlebury on Saturday, March 12 in its first game on its new home field, the recently renovated and resurfaced Garcelon Field.
