Bobcats of the week of Apr. 18, 2011
|Chris Murtagh ’11
Bates senior All-AmericanChris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) had a brilliant day, despite cold and windy conditions, on Saturday at the Colby Invitational, highlighted by his record-breaking performance in the hammer throw. Murtagh’s top effort of 196 feet and 4 inches sailed well beyond the former team standard of 193-7 set last year by Murtagh’s former teammate in both college and high school, Rich McNeil’10, and automatically qualified him to compete in the hammer at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.Bates’ all-time performance list in the hammer throw is particularly distinguished: it includes 12 former All-Americans in the event, including four NCAA champions in Anton Kishon (1935),Wayne Pangburn (1965 and 1966), Mark Miller (1981) and Jaime Sawler (2002).
Murtagh also set a personal record in the discus throw, finishing second behind sophomore teammate David Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) at 160-10 and meeting provisional qualification for NCAAs in that event.
|Ansley Flanagan ’13
Bates sophomore Ansley Flanagan(Roxbury, Conn.) showed both outstanding versatility and that she is a runner to watch on the women’s track and field team, as she won two events over competition from Colby and Southern Maine at the Colby Invitational on Saturday.Flanagan claimed first place out of 14 athletes in the 100-meter dash, with a hand-clocked time of 12.6 seconds. Her performance moved her from sixth on Bates’ all-time performance list in the 100 to third, behind only Anne Millham (1988) and Meghan Lockwood (1996).
Flanagan also took first place out of 20 competitors in the 200-meter dash, at 27.50 seconds, and was third in the high jump, at a career-best 4 feet and 11.75 inches. Flanagan also ran on Bates’ second-place 4×100 relay team.
The week before at Bates’ home meet against Colby and MIT, Flanagan moved up one spot on Bates’ all-time performance list in the 200, with a personal-best time of 26.54 seconds.
Flanagan and the Bates women compete at the Aloha Relays this Saturday at Bowdoin at 11 a.m. The heptathlon portion of the meet starts Friday afternoon.
