LEWISTON, Maine — Carey Correa hit two home runs, her first two of the season, and Melissa DellaTorre pitched a four-hitter to lead Bowdoin over the Bates softball team, 4-1, on Friday at Lafayette Street Field.
The NESCAC East Division rivals resume their three-game series tomorrow at Bowdoin, with the first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
Bowdoin (18-14, 7-3 NESCAC East) got all the scoring it would need by plating three runs in the second inning. Toni DaCampo reached on an error and scored on Gen Barlow’s double into the left field corner to make it 1-0. Correa then drove her first homer of the season over the right-field fence to make it 3-0.
The Bobcats (7-10, 1-6 NESCAC East) got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Junior Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) led off with a single, and sophomore AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) reached on an error while bunting Ullmann over. Junior Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) then singled into right center, scoring Ullmann, but Martino was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw by second baseman Amy Hackett.
The teams traded zeroes on the scoreboard over the next four innings, with both teams’ pitchers pitching well. Bowdoin got an insurance run in the seventh as Correa drilled her second round-tripper to the opposite field to make it 4-1.
Bates sophomore starter Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) went seven strong innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out six. DellaTorre limited Bates to four hits and one walk, striking out eight.
