PITTSFIELD, Mass. — No. 1 nationally ranked Williams defeated No. 2 Bates in both the women’s varsity eight races, as the Bobcat women’s and men’s rowing teams both had strong days at the Onota Cup on Saturday.
All five of Bates’ boats on the day finished second to Williams but defeated all other boats from Ithaca and Coast Guard — a strong performance against excellent competition.
Bates’ WV8 lost 7:14.3 to 7:23.0 to Williams, who has nipped Bates for first place in the Grand Final at the past two NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships. But the Bobcats defeated No. 7 Ithaca by 5.4 seconds, and Coast Guard by 14.7. Bates’ W2V8 trailed Williams by 5.7 seconds but trounced Ithaca by 14.8. Bates’ W3V8 also finished well ahead of Ithaca.
Bates’ men’s varsity eight cleared Ithaca by 2.1 seconds in a three-boat race for second place behind Williams, 6:43.7 to 6:45.8, followed by Coast Guard at 6:49.1. Bates’ M2V8 beat Coast Guard 6:58.4 to 7:02.0 for second place, with Ithaca a distant fourth.
Next up for Bates crews are the New England Championships, Saturday, April 30 in Worcester, Mass.
