Berg, Bettles, Crampton all named to All-NESCAC Men's Tennis Team
HADLEY, Mass. — The Bates College men’s tennis team saw three of its members receive recognition on Friday as the New England Small College Athletic Conference released the NESCAC Tennis All-Conference Teams.
Sophomore Matt Bettles earned First Team Singles honors, his first all-conference singles award, as well as Second Team Doubles honors. Bettles’ doubles partner, sophomore Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) earned Second Team Singles and Doubles recognition, his first two All-NESCAC awards. First-year Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.), meanwhile, was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year, in addition to receiving Second Team Singles honors.
This is the first year Bates has placed three team members on the All-NESCAC team, in the 11 years of its existence. Berg is Bates’ second-ever Rookie of the Year, following former NCAA singles champion Will Boe-Wiegaard ’06 in 2003.
Bettles (Taunton, England), who was one of 32 players in the country selected on Wednesday to compete for the NCAA Division III men’s singles championship, sported an 8-9 mark in dual-match play against Bates’ opponents’ top singles players, and was 16-12 overall for the year. Bettles received All-NESCAC Second Team Doubles honors a year ago.
Crampton accumulated a 15-8 singles record over the past year, including an 11-6 mark in dual-match play, usually at the No. 2 singles spot for the Bobcats.
Bettles and Crampton were 15-7 as Bates’ No. 1 doubles team, and are currently the third-ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Berg was 11-6 in dual-match play this spring, including a 9-4 record at No. 3 singles and a 6-2 showing against NESCAC opponents. The freshman is currently the 23rd-ranked singles player in the Northeast Region, while Bettles is eighth and Crampton is 22nd.
