HADLEY, Mass. — Bates sophomore shortstop Ryan Sonberg has been selected First Team on the NESCAC All-Conference Baseball Teams, announced on Wednesday by the NESCAC All-Conference Baseball Team on Wednesday.
On a team chock-full of productive seniors, Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) stood out in his first season in the Bobcats’ starting lineup, as meanwhile the Bobcats had their second straight, and second ever, 20-win season at 21-15.
Sonberg seemed to hit the ball hard all season long, even on many of the outs he made, and he quickly became a regular at or near the top of the batting order, posting a team-leading batting average at .364 and accumulating 43 hits, including 10 doubles and three triples, with 17 runs batted in and 26 runs scored. He ranked second on the team in slugging percentage (.500), and was third in on-base percentage (.433), tied for second in runs, second in doubles and first in triples.
Sonberg played a very steady shorstop for the Bobcats, at least for the great majority of the season (he committed half of his eight errors on the season in a single game). He finished with a very respectable .943 fielding percentage, helping to turn 11 double plays on the year.
