LEWISTON, Maine — Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) made 13 saves and scored a shutout in her collegiate debut, and Michelle Brady netted the game-winning goal with 4:07 left in the second half as the Bates field hockey team edged Williams 1-0 in Saturday’s season opener for both teams.
Bates sophomore Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) fed Brady (Milton, Mass.) in front of the Williams net, and Brady slipped the ball past Williams netminder Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, Md.) for the game-winner in the 66th minute.
Williams outshot Bates 21-7 in the game, underscoring Otley’s, and the Bobcat defense’s, outstanding performance. Spiliotes had two saves for the Ephs.
Otley, a sophomore, joined the field hockey team this year, and replaced former All-NESCAC goalie Katie McEnroe, Bates’ four-year starter who graduated in May. Otley was put to the test right away, making a diving save of a penalty corner shot by the Ephs. Williams outshot Bates 9-4 in the first half, and Otley turned away seven shots.
She added six more saves in the second half.
After Brady’s goal with 4:07 left in the game, the Bobcats successfully kept the ball out of their end to let the clock run out.
It is the second 1-0 victory over Williams in as many years for Bates and head coach Wynn Hohlt, a Williams alumna.
The Bobcats will play at Husson on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in their first non-conference game.
