Baran nets goal for field hockey at No. 15 Trinity
HARTFORD, Conn. — No. 15 Trinity ran away with a 6-1 NESCAC victory over the Bates field hockey team on Sunday, in the Bobcats’ second conference road game in as many days.
The Bantams (3-1, 3-1 NESCAC) led 2-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals by Sophie Doering. The Bantams increased their lead to 4-0 with scores by Payson Sword and Alanna Capasso in the second half, before Bates junior midfielder Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career with 14:55 left in the game, closing the gap to 4-1.
Hadley Duncan put the game away, however, making it 5-1 less than a minute later. Sarah Duncan added a final tally for Trinity with time expired.
Sophomore Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) started in goal and made eight saves, allowing three goals in 46:07. First-year Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) played the final 23:53 and made two saves. Senior captain Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) attempted a team-high three shots for Bates.
