John Murphy ’13 Bates junior midfielder/forward John Murphy led a high-scoring triumvirate for the Bobcats in a 1-2 week. Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) netted two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 win at UMaine-Farmington on Sept. 14, while fellow junior Ethan Hirshberg(Concord, N.H.) scored once and sophomoreTyler Grees (Williamstown, Mass.) added a pair of assists. Murphy’s second goal of the second half came on a free kick.On Saturday at No. 7 Amherst, Bates nearly came back to tie the game after falling behind 3-0. Hirshberg closed the gap to 3-1 on a penalty kick, before Murphy assisted juniorRyan March (Concord, N.H.) on a second goal to close within one goal of the Lord Jeffs in a 3-2 setback.

Tina Tobin ’12 The Bates women’s soccer team didn’t get a win last week, but did pull out two important ties in an 0-1-2 week against three tough NESCAC opponents. Senior captainTina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) figured into all three of Bates’ goals in the crucial week.Tobin and first-yearDakota Donovan(Marblehead, Mass.) both tallied a goal and an assist in the Bobcats’ 2-2 tie at home against Bowdoin on Sept. 14, snapping the Polar Bears’ five-game winning streak against Bates that dates back to 2006.
On Sunday at Trinity, Tobin put the Bobcats ahead 1-0 with an assist from sophomoreJaimie Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.), in an eventual 1-1 tie with the Bantams.
