Volleyball takes lead vs. Rivier before Raiders storm back

LEWISTON, Maine — Rivier College came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Bates College volleyball team 3-1 (16-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-22) in a non-conference match on Friday night at Alumni Gymnastium.
Kenna Finlayson (Derry, N.H.) led the Raiders (5-9) in kills (13), blocks (7), digs (19) and service aces (4). Nicole Peacock added five kills and seven blocks. Lauren Saccoccio paced Rivier with 28 assists.
Bates (0-9) was undone by 15 service errors.
First-year setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) passed out 27 assists as four Bobcats had five or more kills, in senior Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) with eight, first-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) with eight, senior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) with seven and junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) with five. Junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a match-high 21 digs.
Schow and Getsinger had three kills apiece as Bates started off the match in strong fashion, breaking away from an 8-8 tie to seize an 18-11 lead. The Bobcats scored the set’s final two points on kills by Getsinger and Russell for a 1-0 set lead. Rivier turned up the defense in the second set, registering six team blocks and taking advantage of 12 Bates attack errors. Finlayson dominated the final two sets, coming up with four kills in the third set and five more in the fourth.
Bates plays a non-conference match at Bowdoin tomorrow at 11 a.m., followed at 1:30 p.m. by a second non-conference match at Bowdoin against Colby-Sawyer.
