LEWISTON, Maine — Charlotte Cosgrove’s spectacular shot in the fifth minute stood up as the lone goal of the game, as Hamilton College defeated Bates College 1-0 in the teams’ first game as NESCAC opponents.
Cosgrove had the ball well beyond the left border of Bates’ penalty area just 4:27 into the game, and she drove a hard left-footed shot from a tough angle that traveled over the hands of leaping Bates goalie Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) and found the side netting near the top right corner of Bates’ goal for her third goal of the season.
The game was evenly played, with Bates pushing the tempo in the second half. Hamilton outshot Bates 22-14, but the Continentals were largely off the mark, forcing Burns to make only five saves.
Burns made a key save midway through the second half after a Hamilton corner kick to preserve the one-goal deficit. Later, Bates sophomore Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) nearly evened the score with a shot that Hamilton goalie Liza Gergenti punched over the crossbar. Gergenti totaled three saves.
