Volleyball beats WPI and Salve Regina by 3-1 scores

WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) and senior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) combined for 42 kills over two matches to help Bates sweep a volleyball tri-match against host WPI and Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon, both by 3-1 scores.

Bates (5-16) defeated the host Engineers by set scores of 25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18, to drop WPI to 17-8 in the first match of the day. Gee smacked 10 kills and scooped 15 digs for the Bobcats while Pyne added nine kills.

First-year setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) had a match-high 38 assists and junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) anchored the defensive effort with 18 digs.

The Bobcats faced the Seahawks of Salve Regina (15-10) immediately afterward, winning by set scores of 25-21, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21.

Pyne filled the stat sheets with 14 kills, five blocks and four aces.  First-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) chipped in with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Walther amassed 45 assists, Gee registered nine kills, and senior Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) totaled eight kills and three blocks.

The Bobcats finish the season next weekend at home, playing host to a NESCAC weekend. Bates plays Trinity on Friday at 6 p.m. and Wesleyan on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Both of Bates’ matches can be followed online via live video webcast.

Four other matches not involving Bates will also be played in either Alumni Gym or the Gray Cage: Bowdoin vs. Wesleyan (Friday at 8 p.m.), Bowdoin vs. Trinity (Saturday at 11 a.m.), Colby vs. Wesleyan (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and Colby vs. Trinity (Saturday at 1:30 p.m.).
