CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College women’s varsity eight finished second only to rival Williams among 29 boats competing in the Collegiate Eights Women race Sunday at the 47th Head of the Charles Regatta.
Sophomore coxswain Gabriella Bilotta (Washington, D.C.) guided the Bates women’s eight through the serpentine course in 17:18.510, outpacing third-place Grand Valley State by 3.78 seconds for second place. Only Williams, who has edged Bates for the NCAA Championship in each of the past three years, rowed faster. Last year the Bobcats finished third in the same race.
The Bates boat’s lineup also included senior stroke Allison DiSalvo (Lowell, Mass.), senior Elizabeth Sonshine (Short Hills, N.J.), sophomore Heather Monty (Bedford, N.H.), sophomore Alexandra Hill (Wayland, Mass.), sophomore Hope King (Greenwich, Conn.), first-year Mallory Ward (Pittsford, N.Y.), sophomore Bliss Baker (Sherborn, Mass.) and senior Haley Sive (Glenville, N.Y.) in the bow.
The Bates women’s second varsity eight was also impressive, taking 10th place in the race in a time of 18:04.490, ahead of the varsity eights of such competition as 11th-place Wesleyan, 12th-place Marietta and 13th-place Mount Holyoke.
The Bates men’s rowing team achieved a 24th-place showing out of 40 boats in the Men’s Collegiate Eights, timing in at 16:10.774, less than a second behind 23rd-place Trinity 2. On Saturday the Bates men took 21st place out of 39 entries in Men’s Collegiate Fours.
