Senior wide receiverJohn Squires and the Bates football team lit up the Middlebury Panther defense, while the leading offense in Division III returned the favor against the Bates defense in Saturday’s 49-43 home loss for the Bobcats. Bates piled up 537 offensive yards in the game, the Bobcats’ highest total in over 12 years.Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) posted career-high totals of 11 catches — one shy of tying the all-time Bates record — and 174 receiving yards, including a 38-yard touchdown connection with junior quarterback Trevor Smith (Malvern, Pa.) that put Bates ahead 27-21 in the third quarter of the game.Squires is tied for 39th in the country — with sophomore teammate Ryan Curit (South Portland, Maine), among others — in receptions per game (6.20), and he ranks 44th in Division III in receiving yards per game (90.80), and stands among the top five in both categories in the NESCAC.

Bates (2-3) plays at Colby this Saturday at 1 p.m. in the opening game of the annual CBB series. The game can be followed via live video webcast.

Chrissy Gee ’12
Senior captain Chrissy Gee had her all-around game going on all cylinders on Saturday, as she helped the Bates volleyball team to a pair of 3-1 wins over two teams with winning records, WPI and Salve Regina, in a tri-match mini-tournament at WPI.Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) cranked out 2.38 kills per set, second on the team behind junior middle blocker Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.), while also excelling on defense, coming up with 3.00 digs per set and 0.38 blocks per set, including two solo blocks. Gee ranks second on the team this season in both kills per set (2.14) and digs per set (2.43).Gee and the Bobcats finish up their season at Alumni Gym this weekend as they host a NESCAC weekend with Trinity, Wesleyan, Bowdoin and Colby. Bates plays Trinity on Friday at 6 p.m. and Wesleyan on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Four other matches not involving Bates will also be played in either Alumni Gym or the Gray Cage: Bowdoin vs. Wesleyan (Friday at 8 p.m.), Bowdoin vs. Trinity (Saturday at 11 a.m.), Colby vs. Wesleyan (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and Colby vs. Trinity (Saturday at 1:30 p.m.).
