Women’s basketball dominates Terriers, 112-47
LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women’s basketball team coasted to a 112-47 win over Thomas College on Tuesday night at Alumni Gym, tying the team record for 3-pointers in a game with 12 and scoring the third most points in program history.
Sophomore Meredith Kelly scored a team-high 21 points in just nine minutes of action, shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Junior Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) was also 8-for-9, en route to 18 points in 13 minutes. Four other Bobcats scored in double figures, with senior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.), senior Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) and first-year Hillary Throckmorton (Bangor, Maine) tallying 11 points apiece and first-year Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) adding 10 — career highs for Throckmorton and Murphy, both rookies. Fellow first-year Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) had team highs with seven assists and six boards, while senior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) also passed out seven assists in 15 minutes of action.
The Bobcats (5-1) emptied their bench with 4:55 left in the first half, holding a 58-13 lead at that point.
Karin Bird then hit a pair of free throws and at that point had scored all 15 of the Terriers’ (1-6) points. Bird finished with a game-high 23 points, while Elizabeth Goodall added 15. The first Thomas player other than Bird or Goodall to score was Jasmine Bishop, who tallied the Terriers’ 38th point on a jumper with 3:36 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats pounced on the Terriers in the first five minutes of the game, building a 22-5 lead in that time. Even as head coach Jim Murphy rapidly mixed in bench players, the lead just continued to rocket upward, and a three by Throckmorton finished off the first period with a 69-20 Bates advantage.
The Bobcats then scored the first 20 points of the second period to assume an 89-20 lead with 14:47 still to play, which is when Murphy took his starters off the floor for the final time.
Bates’ 12 threes tied the team record set against Mount Ida College on Nov. 20, 2004.
Bates plays at rival Bowdoin on Thursday night in the team’s non-conference matchup.
