Boniface, swimming and diving teams shine at UMaine
ORONO, Maine — Senior captain Tom Boniface (Youngstown, Ohio) won three events, highlighting a series of strong performances by the Bates men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in a dual meet at the Division I University of Maine on Saturday.
The host Black Bears prevailed in team scoring by a 169-125 score in the men’s meet and by a 210-90 count in the women’s competition.
Boniface won the 200-yard freestyle race in 1:47.69, edging Maine’ Yuri Chornobil by 0.72 seconds. Boniface later took first place in the 100 freestyle, in 49.52 seconds, then won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.63, 0.87 seconds ahead of Maine senior Brian Landry.
The Bobcats finished first in six other events on the day, five by members of the men’s team:
Senior Dan Aupi (Branford, Conn.) won the 100 backstroke by two-hundredths of a second over Maine’ Drew MacKeil, with a time of 54.92 seconds.
First-year Matthew Gagne (Winnetka, Ill.) won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.74.
Senior Travis Jones (Ithaca, N.Y.) won the 1-meter diving by a wide margin over two Black Bear divers, with 258.45 points, as well as the 3-meter event with 245.77 points.
Sophomore Venkatesh Duvvuri (South Orange, N.J.) won the 100 butterfly in 54.42.
Bates women’s captain Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) claimed first place in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:57.90, beating Maine first-year Abigail Linn by 0.54 seconds.
Bates’ men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have their annual training trip to Deerfield Beach, Fla., over the holiday break, followed by a home dual meet against Norwich and the University of New England on Jan. 7 at 3pm.
