Mark Brust ’13
Bates junior guard Mark Brust overcame some recent shooting struggles in a big way last week. It’s probably no coincidence that the Bobcats could use Brust’s performances to sweep rivals Colby and Bowdoin in a big 2-0 weekend.
Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) entered Friday night’s game against Colby having shot 2-for-16 in the Bobcats’ opening weekend of NESCAC play, a pair of losses to national top-10 teams Middlebury and Williams. Against the Mules, Brust worked his medium-range offense to great effect, making 6-of-11 shots from the field and scoring 13 points in a 66-55 triumph (a game also marked by senior John Squires’ career-high 17 points and 20 rebounds).
The following afternoon, Brust only got hotter. Mixing his mid-range game in with beating the Polar Bears down the floor with some hard-pushing layups, and also hitting both of his three-point attempts, Brust scored a game- and career-high 22 points, making 10-of-14 shots from the field. He also adding five assists and two steals as Bates shocked Bowdoin with an 81-60 trouncing. For the week, he averaged 17.5 points on 64.0% shooting and committed just one turnover.
