Buetow leads Nordic teams in classic races at UNH
JACKSON, N.H. — Bates sophomore Jordan Buetow placed sixth out of 89 competitors in the men’s 20K freestyle mass start race, leading the Bobcat Nordic teams Saturday at the UNH Winter Carnival.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished seventh out of 17 teams overall. The points from Saturday’s alpine slalom races at the UNH Carnival counted double, after Friday’s giant slaloms were called off.
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) was one of only six competitors to complete the race in under 50 minutes, registering a 49:59.8 time to edge Colby’s Jake Barton by 1.1 seconds for sixth. Junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) also had an outstanding race, finishing 18th in 50:39.4. Sophomore Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) rounded out the scoring in 36th place at 52:32.1.
The Bates women also had a pair of strong performances in the women’s 15K freestyle, with senior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) taking a solid 15th place out of 75 skiers in 43:44.4, and first-year standout Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) finishing 23rd in 45:06.5. Senior Kelsey Dion (Truckee, Calif.) was Bates’ third scorer, in 61st overall at 50:12.7.
Bates competes next weekend, Feb. 4-5, at the UVM Winter Carnival, at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt.
The Bates men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams both had an excellent first day of the UNH Winter Carnival on Friday at Jackson XC, with the men’s team placing fourth out of 13 teams and the women’s team taking sixth out of 11 teams in the classic sprint races.
Buetow led the men’s team, taking 13th place out of 86 skiers with a time of 3:38.43. Right behind was first-year Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine), in 14th at 3:39.44. Hamilton finished 30th in 3:46.88.
Junior Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) paced the women’s squad with a 15th-place time of 4:21.50 among 80 competitors. Taylor finished 27th in 4:21.44, and Grossman rounded out Bates’ scoring in 40th, at 4:35.03.
