Rookies Dunleavy, Hayes among top 10 at UNH Carnival
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — Bates first-years Avril Dunleavy and Emily Hayes both finished among the top 10 out of 55 competitors in the slalom competition on Saturday at the UNH Winter Carnival at Attitash Mountain.
The points from Saturday’s slalom races counted double in the UNH Carnival’s team scoring, after Friday’s giant slaloms were postponed. Those races are now scheduled to be made up on Feb. 12, the day after the Dartmouth Carnival concludes, at Burke Mountain in Vermont.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) came in ninth place, following up her exceptional first run of 49.70 seconds with a 55.30 on the second run for a combined time of 1:45.00, .09 behind eighth-place Marie-Elaine LePine of host New Hampshire. Hayes (Natick, Mass.) was just .14 seconds behind Dunleavy at 1:45.14.
Sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) finished out the scoring for the Bobcat women, claiming a solid 22nd place at 1:48.12, allowing the Bates women to place an outstanding fourth place out of 12 women’s squads, with 168 carnival points.
The Bates men’s team had two competitors who didn’t finish their first run, while the remaining four didn’t qualify for a second run in this season’s revised format (top 60 from the first run qualify for the second run).
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished the UNH Carnival in seventh place out of 17 teams overall. The alpine team competes next weekend at the UVM Winter Carnival in Stowe, Vt.
