Women’s alpine takes second again at UVM Carnival
STOWE, Vt. — The Bates women’s alpine ski team placed two first-years among the top four, and three among the top 12 skiers, for a second straight outstanding performance at the UVM Carnival on Saturday. The Bobcats finished second out of 13 squads for the second consecutive day at the carnival.
First-year Avril Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished third out of 72 skiers overall, with a two-run combined time of 1:50.94, including the best second-run of any competitor, at 55.23 seconds. Dunleavy finished sixth in Friday’s giant slaloms.
Fellow first-year Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) had the best day of her young collegiate career, taking fourth place in 1:51.67. Sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) came in 12th at 1:54.41, just .11 outside of the top 10. The Bobcats’ whopping total of 113 carnival points in the women’s slalom had the Bobcats ahead of such competition as Dartmouth (99) and Middlebury (74).
First-year Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) led the men’s team on Saturday, in 26nd place out of 80 skiers with a combined time of 1:56.57. Sophomore Devon Brown (Newry, Maine) was 31st (2:03.67), and sophomore Brent Talbott (Menlo Park, Calif.) was 35th (2:12.44).
The Bobcats’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams placed fifth among 15 teams at the UVM Carnival in carnival scoring, trailing only Dartmouth, Vermont, Middlebury and New Hampshire.
Bates women’s alpine placed three skiers among the top 12 in the giant slalom to score the second-most carnival points out of 13 teams.
Dunleavy took sixth place out of 68 competitors at Mt. Mansfield with a two-run combined time of 2:13.15. First-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded her first top-10 finish, taking ninth place at 2:13.37. Junior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) came in 12th at 2:14.38.
With 94 carnival points, the Bates women outscored all but Dartmouth (103), bettering rivals such as Williams (84), Harvard (78), New Hampshire (77), Middlebury (69) and Vermont (30).
Men’s team senior captain Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) led the Bobcat men by taking 20th place among 66 competitors, with a combined time of 2:08.64. First-year Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) came in 29th at 2:10.68, and sophomore Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) rounded out the squad’s scoring in 37th at 2:13.63.
