Hayes sixth in slalom at Dartmouth Winter Carnival
LYME CENTER, N.H. — First-year Emily Hayes placed sixth in the races to lead the Bates alpine ski teams on Saturday at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Hayes (Natick, Mass.) posted a two-run combined time of 1:40.09, sixth best among 68 competitors, leading the Bates women for a second straight day at Dartmouth Skiway. It is Hayes’ third top-six carnival showing this year, with all three coming in the slalom.
Sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) finished second for the Bobcats in 19th place, at 1:43.09, followed by a .01 margin in 20th by first-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) at 1:43.10. The three combined for 80 carnival points, good for fifth place among 13 competing teams.
Senior captain Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) led the Bates men in 21st place out of 74 in the slaloms, at 1:35.58. Sophomore Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) was 30th in 1:38.09
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished sixth out of 15 teams at the carnival, with 519 points. The Bobcats compete next weekend at the Williams Carnival at Jiminy Peak.
Hayes and Fitzpatrick finished 14th and 15th, respectively, to lead the Bates women’s alpine ski team to sixth place out of 13 teams in the giant slalom on Friday.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams have 262 carnival points halfway through the weekend, good for a tie for fifth place with Williams among 15 teams.
Hayes had a two-run combined time of 1:57.34, followed closely by Fitzpatrick in 1:57.38. Junior captain Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) rounded out the scoring in 19th, at 1:57.64, and rookie Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) nearly picked up her first carnival points by finishing 21st in 1:57.81.
Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) came in 31st to lead the Bates men’s squad, with a combined time of 1:54.46. First-year Peter Cole (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) was 35th (1:56.91) and sophomore Brent Talbott (Menlo Park, Calif.) was 38th (1:57.67).
