Hayes, Jones shine in makeup GS races at Burke Mtn.
EAST BURKE, Vt. — Bates first-year Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) finished up a busy and productive weekend with her best giant slalom performance of the season, as the EISA tour made up the GS races missed at the UNH Carnival two weeks ago by staging GS races at Burke Mountain.
First-year Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) finished 11th in 2:05.45, and sophomore Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) took 20th place in 2:07.08.
Senior captain Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) notched the fifth fastest second run in the men’s GS, at 57.49 seconds, en route to an 11th-place showing out of 75 overall at 1:59.12, his best of the season. Sophomore Coleman Lieb (Ray Brook, N.Y.) finished 28th in 2:02.60.
On Friday, Hayes took 14th place in the giant slalom at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, held at Dartmouth Skiway, with a two-run combined time of 1:57.34, followed closely by fellow first-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) in 15th at 1:57.38. In Saturday’s slalom races at Dartmouth, Hayes posted a two-run combined time of 1:40.09, sixth best among 68 competitors, leading the Bates women for a second straight day. It was Hayes’ third top-six carnival showing this year.
