BIDDEFORD, Maine — Senior Jason Hichborn scored three goals in the second half to lead the Bates men’s lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 6-4 non-conference victory at the University of New England on Tuesday. The Bobcats outscored UNE 5-0 in the second half to hand the host Nor’easters their first loss of the season.
After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Bobcats (2-3) trailed 4-1 at the half as the Nor’easters held Bates scoreless over the final 27 minutes of the half. Meanwhile Geoff Bruno scored a pair of goals, and Dan O’Gorman added back-to-back scores at the 1:23 and 1:16 marks of the second quarter.
Bates senior goalkeeper Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) was replaced after intermission by sophomore Charlie Kazarian (Providence, R.I.). Kazarian came up with four saves in 30 minutes in earning the win.
UNE (4-1) held its 4-1 lead over the first eight-plus minutes of the third quarter, until sophomore Wylie Leabo (Belmont, Mass.) closed the gap to 4-2 with an unassisted tally at the 6:27 mark.
Hichborn (Yarmouth, Maine) then scored the first of three straight unassisted goals with 1:15 left in the third, making it 4-3. Neither team scored again until Hichborn, 22 seconds out of a Bates timeout, netted another score with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter, tying the game for the first time since the first quarter at 4-4.
Leabo fired a shot at 3:11 in a bid to take the lead, but Hichborn followed 12 seconds later with his third goal of the game, and his team-high seventh of the season.
Sophomore Paul Donovan (Norwell, Mass.) won nine of the last 10 face-offs on the day to help the visitors get possessions down the stretch. Senior Reed Brown (Portsmouth, N.H.) led Bates with five ground balls.
For UNE, senior Nate Porter made several keys plays to keep the Nor’easters on top for most of the match, finishing with seven saves and five ground balls. Nick McMahon forced six of the team’s 11 caused turnovers.
