Bobcat of the Week of March 19, 2012: Jacqui Holmes ’13
Along with first-year Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) and sophomore Lucy Brennan (Wellesley, Mass.), junior Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) was one of three players to go 2-0 with wins in singles and doubles in the Bates women’s tennis team’s big 6-3 victory over No. 23 nationally ranked MIT on Saturday.
Holmes teamed up with Brennan to win 8-4 at third singles, as the Bobcats entered singles play with a 2-1 lead over the Engineers, who are also ranked eighth in the Northeast.
The junior captain went on to win at No. 3 singles as well, despite dropping the first set in 90 minutes, according to the team blog, by a 6-4 score. As described in the blog, Holmes “stayed disciplined and never went for too much or tried to force the issue. When her opponent [Michelle Dutt] would get tired, Jacqui’s conditioning paid off and she gutted out the 5th point with a 6-4 third-set win.”
It was the biggest win in what is shaping up to be a strong season for the Bobcats. A year ago at MIT, the Engineers won 9-0. Bates now stands 6-3 overall and next faces Brandeis at home on March 31 at 11am. By that time, Bates may have a regional or national ranking of its own to boast about.
