Revenge-seeking Amherst wins two from baseball
AMHERST, Mass. — A year after the Bates baseball team blasted Amherst 12-0 at Hadlock Field in Portland, Amherst got revenge with a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats on Sunday at Memorial Field. The host Lord Jeffs won Game 1 5-1 before winning 20-5 in Game 2.
Since the teams play in separate baseball divisions of the NESCAC, the two nine-inning games don’t affect conference standings.
A day after routing Becker College in a doubleheader sweep at home, the Bobcats fell to 14-12 with Sunday’s losses, while the NESCAC West-leading Jeffs rose to 17-5.
Sophomore Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) stayed hot at the plate for Bates, going a combined 3-for-5 on the day, including a double, and also getting hit by an Amherst pitch three times. Tewksbury batted 7-for-11 (.636) on the weekend. First-year Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) also had three hits on the day, and sophomore Ryan Curit (South Portland, Maine) had two.
Sophomore lefthander Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) gave a solid complete-game effort in Game 1, allowing five runs, only one of them earned, on 12 hits and no walks over eight innings.
Amidst Amherst’s 19-hit barrage in Game 2, which lasted 3 hours and 15 minutes, Bates senior righthander Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine) threw two no-hit innings of relief, allowing just a walk and striking out three batters.
Fifteen players recorded a hit for Amherst (17-5), which won its seventh consecutive game and improved to 10-1 in its past 11. Mike Samela came up with the biggest defensive play of the opener and drove in four runs in the nightcap, while Nolan Stewart belted his second home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games.
Fred Shepard improved to 5-0 after striking out four and allowing one run on four hits in the first six innings of the opener. John Cook ’15 also maintained a perfect record (4-0) by giving up only one run in five innings of game two.
Bates plays host to Curry College for a nine-inning game on Tuesday at 4pm (Live Stats).
