Bobcat of the Week of April 23, 2012: Karen Ullmann ’12
Karen Ullmann’s productive four-year career as the right fielder on the Bates softball team made its first appearance in the team’s record books about a year ago, when Ullmann’s ninth career triple gave her the record.
Fast-forward to Sunday’s doubleheader at Thomas College, in which Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) hit two triples in Game 2, to claim sole ownership of Bates’ single-season triples record and extend her own career triples mark. Ullmann began the day tied with Emily Gabler’s single-season record of six triples from 1985, and she now has eight this year. With 17 career triples, Ullmann has more than twice as many as any other Bobcat in team history.
But triples are only the beginning. While other senior teammates such as Lauren Dobish, Kristen Finn, Leah Maciejewski and Kelly McManus have also been surging to the top of some of the team’s all-time offensive statistical categories, Ullmann has taken ownership of another four team records in recent days: runs (93), singles (87), bases on balls (44) and stolen bases (42).
Ullmann and the Bobcats host Husson in a doubleheader on Wednesday (3:30pm), followed by a three-game weekend series with Bowdoin, which includes a home doubleheader on Saturday at 12pm, the team’s regular-season finale.
