Bobcat of the Week of May 7, 2012: Ryan Sonberg ’13
Ryan Sonberg’s junior season of baseball had bordered on the “lost” variety for much of the spring. Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.), a First Team All-NESCAC shortstop in 2011, suffered an injury when sliding into third base on the first day of the regular season this year, in a doubleheader at Berry College in Georgia on Feb. 21.
He missed the next 13 games, finally returning to action on March 30, but he wasn’t the same player. By the time Bates’ series with Trinity concluded on April 21, Sonberg’s batting average had dipped to .196.
Since then, however, Sonberg’s play has picked up significantly, and this past week he again looked like a first-team all-conference player. In Bates’ 6-1 loss at Southern Maine on Wednesday, Sonberg went 4-for-4, including a double and a stolen base. Bates then hosted Williams on Sunday for the Bobcats’ final two home games of the season, and Sonberg again came up big, helping Bates sweep the Ephs by collecting four hits over the two games: a single, a double, a triple and his first career home run, as Bates won for the eighth time in nine games. In Bates’ 2-1 week Sonberg batted .667 (8-for-12) with a slugging percentage of 1.250.
