LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College head tennis coach Paul Gastonguay was named Northeast Region Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year Monday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while assistant coach Greg Janssen earned Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors in both men’s and women’s tennis.

The national award winners chosen from the ITA’s four regions, will be announced on May 23.

Gastonguay, a three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year, also won the ITA Northeast Regional Men’s Coach of the Year honor in 2002.

Janssen, in his second year as assistant coach at Bates, is a 2010 graduate of Coe College, where he was all-conference in singles and doubles for three straight years. He is Bates’ second assistant coach to win this award in the past three years, following in the footsteps of former assistant Jason Box, who is now head coach at Millsaps College.

Gastonguay and Janssen have coached both Bates tennis teams to exceptional seasons, including national rankings for both clubs (the men are ranked 14th in Division III by the ITA, while the women are 28th). For the first time, both teams will be represented at this year’s NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships, taking place May 24-26 in Cary, N.C.
