No. 3 Amherst nets two in second half to tip men’s soccer
LEWISTON, Maine — Federico Sucre assisted Jae Heo on the opening goal in the 53rd minute, then added an insurance tally in the 78th minute to lead the No. 3 nationally ranked Amherst College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win at Bates College on Saturday at Russell Street Field.
Amherst (3-0-0, 1-0-0 NESCAC) outshot Bates by a 26-1 margin, including a 12-0 difference in the first half, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until Heo cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Sucre, which clanged off the crossbar and bounced back to Heo.
The 6-foot-5 Sucre gave Amherst a 2-0 lead at 77:45, heading in a nicely placed cross from Max Fikke from just beyond the right end of the Bates penalty area.
Thomas Bull played all 90 minutes in goal for Amherst to get the shutout, despite recording no saves.
Bates first-year Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) played a strong game in goal for the Bobcats, making eight saves, several of them from close range. First-year Zach Shabman (Scarsdale, N.Y.) played the final 4:24 after an injury suffered by Polito.
Bates (1-2-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) will look again for its first conference win tomorrow at 2pm, as Trinity visits Russell Street Field (Video). The Bantams (2-1-0, 1-1-0) lost at home to Williams on Saturday, 3-1.
