Volleyball splits pair of matches at Rivier
NASHUA, N.H. — The Bates volleyball team rebounded from a set down to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15) on Saturday at Rivier University, before falling to the host Raiders 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23).
Senior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) riddled Wentworth (3-4) with 13 kills (against only one attack error) and seven service aces, leading Bates’ ace parade of 20 in all. Junior Sarah Jacobson (Lake Forest, Ill.) added eight kills, and first-year Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) had seven to go with 12 digs. Sophomore Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) totaled 28 assists, and senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had 15 digs and four aces. Michelle Hobbs tallied 10 kills for Wentworth.
The Bobcats (5-3) couldn’t sustain their momentum against Rivier (6-3), despite nine kills by Berry. Kenna Finlayson amassed 16 kills, and Nicole Peacock added seven more with just one attack error to pace the Raiders.
Bates next plays at the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday, although all four matches will take place at Brandeis. On Friday Bates faces MIT at Brandeis at 5pm, followed by a match against Brandeis at 7pm. Saturday will find the Bobcats taking on Mount Ida at 11am and Springfield at 2pm.
