Men’s golf places fifth at Maine state championship
CUMBERLAND, Maine — Led by senior Corey Gingras’s two-day score of 156, the Bates men’s golf team finished fifth among 10 teams at the Maine State Golf Championship, which concluded Sunday at par 72 Val Halla Golf Club.
Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) shot a 5-over 77 on Saturday, tying him for 14th place among 50 men’s players in the tournament. Junior Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) shot a 78 and an 82 to take 21st place overall, and senior Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) tied for 29th place at 166 over two days. Senior Kevin Shaughnessy (Ridgefield, Conn.) followed Saturday’s 86 with an 84 on Sunday to round out Bates’ scoring.
The Bates women were the only women’s team competing at the tournament. Nevertheless, first-year Elizabeth LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) shot a 192 over two days, including a 94 on Sunday, to claim medalist honors for the team. First-year Jessica Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot a 198, followed by first-year Jordan Banez (Fredericksburg, Va.) at 206, sophomore Ali Desjardin (Auburn, Maine) at 243 and junior Jennalee Kulig (East Granby, Conn.) at 249.
