Men’s soccer hands Terriers their first loss, 1-0
WATERVILLE, Maine — Bates senior Ethan Hirshberg headed in a corner kick from senior John Murphy in the 22nd minute, and the Bobcats went on to deal Thomas College its first loss of the season with a 1-0 non-conference win on Sunday.
The host Terriers (5-1-1, 2-0 NAC) received five saves from goalkeeper Mikkail Crockwell.
Hirshberg headed Murphy’s cross past Crockwell in a crowded box. It was Hirshberg’s team-high second goal of the season, and Murphy’s team-high second assist.
Bates held Thomas to just one shot in the first half, while posting 11 themselves.
The Terriers would pick up the pressure in the second half, but were unable to get one by Bates first-year netminder Zach Shabman (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who had three saves in the victory, his second straight shutout.
Bates (2-2-1) had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks and a 20-7 edge in shots attempted in the win.
