LaVerghetta leads women’s golf on Day 1 of Middlebury invite
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Bates women’s golfers Elizabeth LaVerghetta, Jordan Banez and Jessica Plotnikov all finished among the top 36 players among 50 players on Saturday, leading the Bobcats to eighth place among 10 teams on the first day of the highly competitive Middlebury Women’s Golf Invitational.
Bates is well on its way to bettering last year’s 10th-place showing at the Williams Fall Qualifier, which basically was moved to Middlebury’s par 71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course this year. With a team score of 453 after one day, the Bobcats are well ahead of ninth-place Union (531) and 10th-place Westfield State (540). The Bobcats are sixth among six NESCAC teams competing.
LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.), a first-year, is tied for 30th place with a one-day score of 101. Banez (Fredericksburg, Va.) shot a 110 for 35th place, followed by Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 36th at 111 and sophomore captain Ali Desjardins (Auburn, Maine) in 43rd at 131.
