Husson staves off men’s soccer, 3-2 in overtime
BANGOR, Maine — Phil Frost scored his second goal with 4:09 left in the first overtime period to give Husson University a 3-2 non-conference win over the Bates College men’s soccer team on Wednesday night.
In an action-packed game featuring 26 shots for both sides, Bates (2-7-1) spent most of the time playing catchup.
The Eagles (8-4) went ahead in the 12th minute of the game on Cam Libbey’s goal, assisted by James Crockford, and Husson carried the 1-0 edge into the second half. In the 49th minute, Bates senior John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) scored an unassisted goal, curving a free kick into the net to tie the game. Murphy’s third goal this season ties him with senior teammate Ethan Hirshberg (Concord, N.H.) for the team lead, and he assumes the team lead in points with eight.
The tie was short-lived: Trevor Higgins assisted on a Husson goal by Frost for a 2-1 lead, just one minute and 51 seconds after Murphy’s tally.
Murphy’s free kick from near midfield catalyzed another game-tying score by the Bobcats. With 8:01 left in regulation, Murphy sent a long, high ball toward the left goal post. After getting knocked around two or three times at close range in front of the goal, sophomore Aaron Nickelsberg (Concord, Mass.) finished off the play to tie the game up at 2-2, and the game drifted into extra time.
In the 96th minute of the game in overtime, under a heavy rain, Frost scored his second goal of the game when he headed in a free kick from Crockford.
First-year Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) made 12 saves in goal for Bates, while Mason Smith made 10 saves for Husson.
