Volleyball tops Merchant Marine Academy at Kean
UNION, N.J. — The Bates volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision on Saturday morning to Baptist Bible (Pa.) College, then the Bobcats picked up their ninth victory of the season in the afternoon, with a 3-0 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, to conclude play in the Cougar Classic at Kean University.
Senior captain Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) led the Bates attack in both matches, with 13 kills against five errors in the loss to Baptist Bible, followed by 10 kills and five blocks against five errors (.179) in the win over the Mariners. Pyne came away with All-Tournament honors. First-year Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) had seven kills against Baptist Bible and eight more against USMMA, and she rang up six aces against the Defenders.
First-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) led the Bobcats’ back row and was the match leader in both contests with 20 digs against Baptist Bible and 15 against USMMA. Schepel also riddled the Mariners with eight service aces. First-year Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) had five kills and three blocks in the morning match, and two more blocks against USMMA.
The Defenders (19-9) received a match-high 14 kills from Jessica White, along with 12 kills from Jaycee Shirk.
The Mariners (12-16) received eight kills from Cassandra Palma, and five kills and four blocks from Charlene Swick.
Bates (9-14) plays a non-conferencematch at UMaine-Farmington on Wednesday at 7pm. The Bobcats will conclude the regular season with a pair of matches at Alumni Gym during Homecoming Weekend. Bates hosts Trinity on Friday at 8pm (Video), then Amherst on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2pm (Video).
