Men’s rowing 18th in eights, 12th in fours at Head of the Charles
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates men’s rowing team’s varsity eight placed 18th among 37 boats on Sunday in the Men’s Collegiate Eights division of the 48th Head of the Charles Regatta.
The Bates men’s varsity eight finished the serpentine course in 16:35.39, ahead of such competition as 19th-place UC Santa Barbara and 20th-place St. Joseph’s University. Marist finished 17th in 16:28.92, and Virginia was the overall winner in 15:44.20.
In Saturday’s action on the Charles, Bates’ men’s varsity four placed an impressive 12th out of 46 boats, in a time of 17:36.94, outpacing such competition as Notre Dame, Army, Pittsburgh and Fordham.
Also on Sunday, the Bates women’s rowing team’s first varsity eight, ranked No. 2 in Division III, placed sixth out of 26 boats in 18:09.71, 27.06 seconds off the pace set by overall winner Trinity (17:42.65) and only 0.4 seconds behind fifth-place Wellesley. Bates also William Smith (18:00.41), Williams (18:01.38), Grand Valley State (18:04.98) and Wellesley (18:09.31), but finished ahead of the likes of WPI (18:13.02) and Wesleyan (18:25.50).
